How to actually prepare for an exam
Exam preparation is its own discipline, whatever the subject: coverage first, then accuracy per question type, then speed. Most self-directed revision fails on the order — polishing accuracy on favourite topics while whole syllabus areas stay unmet.
The method
Cover the syllabus, then raise accuracy on each question type, then bring it up to exam speed.
Past-paper questions under time, marked against the real scheme.
Where it goes wrong
Revising the comfortable topics and avoiding the rest.
Comfort revision feels productive and changes nothing. Coverage has to be planned against the syllabus, not against mood — which topics get this week is a scheduling decision, made before the session starts.
Knowing the content and still running out of time.
Timing is a separate skill from knowledge, trained separately: full papers under real time constraints, after accuracy exists. Untimed revision cannot build it.
What mastery actually looks like
Not a grade — observable abilities. A plan should be able to say which of these it has evidence for:
- Syllabus coverage — has met every examinable topic.
- Accuracy — scores well on questions of a known type.
- Exam technique — reads the command word and answers what was asked.
- Timing — finishes the paper.
Keeping it
Interleaved past papers — recall under exam conditions is the only retention that counts here.
Common questions
When should I start doing past papers?
Earlier than feels comfortable. Once coverage exists, past-paper questions under time are the main event — the engine plans exam preparation at about 55% practice for this reason.
Is re-reading my notes effective revision?
It is the weakest common method: it builds recognition, and exams test timed recall. Question practice marked against the real scheme is what moves marks.
How do I stop avoiding my weak topics?
Take the choice away from the moment: a plan that schedules topics against the syllabus and the date decides for you, and a placement that finds the real gaps decides honestly.
